The Ultimate Guide to Curating Objects and Styling a Beautiful Shelf

As you know I love styling interiors, I believe that you can have a beautiful stylish home that you love to live in by using what you already have in your home.

Today, I’m sharing with you a few shelf styling tips, or ‘shelfie’ styling as it’s more commonly known.

TIP 1 : BLANK CANVAS

You will need a blank canvas to begin with, so remove everything off the shelves you’re working with. Take the opportunity to dust the shelves to ensure your shelfie will be sparkling clean.  This will give you a starting point and from there you can see the composition of your styling evolve.

HAVE NOTHING IN YOUR HOUSE THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW TO BE USEFUL, OR BELIEVE TO BE BEAUTIFUL”
— William Morris

tip 2: dig for treasure

Go through your cupboards and take a walk around the house. Keep an eye out for the hidden treasures you have that might look great to display on your shelves. You might uncover goodies you forgot about, or have sentimental items that you’d like to display.

Some great items to display, include:

·      Vases & vessels
·      Books
·      Small plants
·      Small artworks
·      Trinkets

·      Ceramics
·      Travel souvenirs
·      Photo frames with special photos
·      Candles

See, I told you, you don’t need to buy new things.. Just hunt around your home and see what goodies you have already!

TIP 3: VIGNETTES

A vignette is a small, curated cluster of objects styled cohesively together.

Create Vignettes on each shelf using your edited collection of books, objects, small art, ceramics and plants in groups of 3-5.  I think any more than 5 objects can look a bit too crowded.

Vignettes help create a sense of purpose with your items because they help pull together the overall visual story.

Now it’s your turn to style a shelfie! I'd love to see you put the Shelfie Styling Guide into action. Style up your shelves, take some photos and post on Instagram.
